Overview
MIIA – Missing in ISPF Application Panels for MVS38J / ISPF v 2.x / Hercules
(current version 0.9.01 2025-03-15)
ISPF 2.x (ISPF-like product from Wally Mclaughlin) provides a help (PF1) function.
One use of the HELP function is to request more detail on an screen error message.
When an error message is displayed, the short message is displayed on line 1, upper-right corner of current screen. Depressing PF1 again, displays the associated long message on line 3 of the current screen. This is traditional ISPF behavior provided a error message uses both, short and long messages.
For example –
When viewing the ISPF Primary Option Menu in the ISPF 2.x base product and PF1 is depressed, an error message ‘PANEL NOT FOUND’ is displayed on line 1, upper-right corner.
When PF1 is depressed again, the long message ‘ISP100E – PANEL ISP00000 NOT FOUND IN ISPPLIB LIBRARY’ is displayed on line 3.
Another use of the HELP function is to request help information on the current display screen followed by a tutorial, if present.
In this case, the HELP function is limited to simply displaying a help panel and subsequently returning to the original screen as no ISPTUTOR program is distributed with ISPF 2.x. Thus, the limited HELP function.
MIIA (Missing in ISPF Application)
ISPF 2.2 does not include any help panels in the distribution package.
However, the following help panels are defined in mainstream ISPF panels (excluding REVIEW and RPF applications):
ISP00000 – ISPF Primary Option Menu
ISP07000 – Dialog Test Primary Option Menu (=7)
ISP07100 – Invoke Dialog Function/Selection Menu (=7.1)
ISP07200 – Display Panel (=7.2)
ISP73H00 – Variables (=7.3)
ISR30000 – Utility Selection Menu (=3)
Each of the above panels are defined as shell panels.
Intercept Shell Panels
As a basic solution to eliminate PANEL NOT FOUND error messages, intercept shell panels are used in place of the missing ISPF help panels to alert user that no help information is available filling a void.
Below is a snippet of the ISPF Primary Option menu help screen:
--HELP----------------------- ISPF ---------------------------HELP-- Command ===> ISPF with REVIEW ISP00000 is a shell intercept screen to prevent 'panel not found' message as HELP is not available in this base product, ISPF v2.2. Installing Software
After downloading the ZIP file, the approach for this installation procedure is to transfer the distribution content file (HET or XMI) from your personal computing device to MVS.
When the transfer completes, associated load JCL (HET, RECV370 or TSO RECEIVE) can also be transferred to MVS to load the distribution software.
Alternatively, the load JCL may be submitted from your device if a TCP/IP socket reader is setup on you device hosting Hercules / MVS 3.8J.
Continue the installation procedure using supplied JCL from the MVS CNTL data set under TSO per the readme.txt instructions.
The below README file includes a ZIP file content list, pre-installation requirements (notes, credits) and installation steps.
